Karin Bubaš: Garden of ShadowsAudain Art Museum, Whistler

Showing September 23 – January 29, 2024

An innovative and cinematic experience, in 2006, her creative focus transitioned from interiors to landscapes, giving rise to her ongoing series Studies in Landscapes and Wardrobe. This series of photographic works features meticulously styled, solitary female figures enveloped by both idyllic and apocalyptic landscapes. Each female subject averts her gaze from the camera, engaging deeply with the space she inhabits. These works pay homage to the portrayal of women in art, cinema, and the tradition of the sublime within 19th-century landscape painting (via press release).

Ángeles Agrela: The Paradoxes of the AuraCentre of International Contemporary Art, Vancouver

Showing September 28 to November 4, 2023

Ángeles’ meticulous chromatic pencil renderings on paper delineate feminine visages ensconced in flamboyant coiffures. These intricate hair adornments that remind us of fashion photography, whilst visually arresting, frequently eclipse segments of the subject’s countenance. This conscious act of occlusion serves a dual interpretation: critiquing the perennial abstraction of the female form whilst compelling the viewer to transcend superficialities, inciting an exploration into the profound narratives veiled beneath these luxuriant exteriors.
